Farmers urged to take up Bluetongue vaccine PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brynle Williams AM
Tuesday, 05 May 2009 00:00

RESPONDING to the announcement today that the Rural Affairs Minister may have to sell on un-used blue tongue vaccines, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams said:

“I am hugely disappointed that more farmers have not taken up the blue tongue vaccine.

“Protecting your animals against this disease is vital and will only save money in the long run.

“I am shocked that we now find ourselves in a situation where the Minister is looking into selling vaccines on so that public money does not end up being wasted.

“Clearly in the current economic climate every penny counts and if Welsh farmers do not want these vaccines, then we must recoup the money the Assembly Government spent on them.”

RESPONDING to the news that 200 jobs are under threat at the Air Products Factory in Acrefair, North Wales AM Brynle Williams said:

“This is a bitter blow for the workers at Acrefair.

“The company has been employing in the area for more than 50 years and it is very sad to hear it may be moving production abroad.

“If the worst is confirmed for these 200 workers, I will be urging the Assembly Government to do all it can to support these men and women to find new employment or re-train.”

Assembly Government urged to help mill workers PDF Print E-mail

NORTH Wales AM and Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams today called for Assembly Government help to save jobs at a Denbighshire animal feed mill.

Mr Williams is writing to the Deputy First Minister and Rural Affairs Minister asking for their support for workers at the BOCM Pauls Mill in Denbigh which is facing closure.

The North Wales AM met management, unions and local council officials yesterday to discuss the future of the plant which is scheduled to close at the end of July.

Mr Williams said the Assembly Government must help the workforce and offer support for retraining and re-deployment to new jobs should the plant close.

He added:

“The threat to jobs and the plant itself is extremely worrying.

“I am concerned not only for the workforce but also for surrounding businesses and the local farming community, all of who would be affected by its closure.

“The Assembly Government needs to support workers faced with losing their jobs and provide all possible help with re-training or finding new work.

“I would expect ministers, working with management, unions and local council officials, to explore every avenue to minimise the impact of this decision and to help all those individuals and businesses affected by it.”

Farmers must make full use of Bluetongue vaccine PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brynle Williams AM
Tuesday, 24 March 2009 00:00

COMMENTING on calls for Welsh farmers to take full advantage of all available stocks of the bluetongue vaccine, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams AM said:

“It is imperative farmers across Wales make use of these vaccines before they turn their livestock out for the summer.

“Vaccinating animals is a vital part of combating the spread of this disease in Wales.

“For around 60p per sheep and £1.20 per cattle this is a good insurance policy which farmers should take full advantage of.

“The only way of preventing the spread of this disease into Wales is to ensure livestock are vaccinated.

“By remaining vigilant and by vaccinating their animals farmers can ensure it does not take hold in Wales.”

Bold decisions vital in tackling Bovine TB PDF Print E-mail

COMMENTING on this afternoon’s Assembly Government statement on the bovine TB eradication programme, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams AM said:

“I very much welcome today’s statement. The minister, with the support of the National Assembly, is taking a bold step in addressing this issue in the way proposed.

“Now is the time to move rapidly towards tackling this disease along the lines proposed today.

“While I don’t want to see the wholesale slaughter of wildlife we cannot afford to sit back and ignore the very real threat posed by this disease to animal health and the farming industry.”
