COMMENTING on today’s publication of the Assembly audit committee report into Tir Gofal, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams AM said:

“While I welcome signs of improvement this is hardly the ringing endorsement the Assembly Government was looking for a scheme it has invested so much effort in.

“We already know from the figures we obtained this summer that there is a significant backlog in handling applications from farmers.

“Farmers play an essential role in maintaining the countryside through agriculture.

“They need to feel they are getting the support they need from the Assembly Government to help maintain Wales’ beautiful landscape.”

Shadow Environment Minister Darren Millar AM added:

“Farmers across Wales need to know the Assembly Government is managing this scheme effectively and efficiently.

“We know from our own figures that this has not always been the case over recent months and that many problems still exist.

“Any improvements are welcome however the Assembly Government must take the criticisms of this report seriously and act upon them.

“The fragile position of Welsh farming must be protected if the beauty of Wales’ landscape is to be maintained.”
